Bloody January tragedy commemorated in Serbia
On January 20, 2017, the 27th anniversary of the bloody January was commemorated in the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Serbia.
The event was attended by the representatives of the Azerbaijani community in Serbia and the Serbian society.
The participants of the commemorative event were acquainted with the photo stand displaying the tragedy of January 20, 1990 and remembered the victims of bloody day with a minute of silence.
Mr.Eldar Hasanov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Serbia said that upon the orders of the USSR Communist Party leadership heavily armed Soviet troops had attacked peaceful civilians in Azerbaijan who had been rallying on the streets, protesting against violation of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and demanding freedom. He noted that the tragedy of 20 January, when 147 men were killed, 744 were injured and hundreds were jailed, is the honorable history of the struggle for freedom against the imperia of the people of Azerbaijan. He highlighted that the heroism of the Azerbaijani people demonstrated during this tragedy caused the collapse of the Soviet regime and totalitarianism.
Eldar Hasanov stressed that on January 21, 1990, Heydar Aliyev, national leader of the Azerbaijani people, came to the the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan in Moscow and protested against the Soviet leadership. He noted that the national leader Heydar Aliyev was the initiator of the political-legal assessment of the tragic events of the January 20, 1990 in the independent Azerbaijan.
The participants of the event noted with assurance that the Azerbaijani people would never forget the victims of January massacre, who sacrificed their lives for the national freedom.
