Bloody January tragedy commemorated in the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Serbia
26th anniversary of the bloody January was commemorated in the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Serbia on January 20, 2016.
The event was attended by the representatives of the Serbian society and the Azerbaijani community inSerbia.
The participants of the commemorative event got acquainted with the photo stand displaying the tragedy of January 20, 1990. The victims of bloody January were remembered with a minute of silence.
Mr.Eldar Hasanov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Serbia, speaking at the commemoration event said that upon the orders of the USSR Communist Party leadership heavily armed Soviet troops had attacked peaceful civilians in Azerbaijan who had been rallying on the streets and protesting against violation of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and demanding freedom. It was underlined that as a result of the punitive actions hundreds of civilians were killed and wounded. Ambassador Eldar Hasanov stressed that the next day of the tragedy, on January 21, 1990, Heydar Aliyev, national leader of the Azerbaijani people, came to the press conference in the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan in Moscow and condemned the aggression of Soviet leadership against Azerbaijan and its people. He noted that it was due to the initiative of the national leader Heydar Aliyev that independent Azerbaijani State for the first time gave political-legal assessment to the tragic events of the January 20, 1990.
Ambassador Eldar Hasanov said that the victims of January massacre, who sacrificed their lives for freedom ofAzerbaijan, will never be forgotten by the Azerbaijani people.
